A small list of some of my favourite organisations:

Persephone Books
A gem of a bookshop in Lambs Conduit Street in London – and a gorgeous website for people who can’t make it to the shop. Persephone Books reprints forgotten classic by twentieth-century writers (mostly women). This is a wonderful company and I hope it’ll still be going in 100 years’ time so they can reprint my books in their elegant dove-grey jackets.

Daunt Books
A small chain of perfect London bookshops for book lovers. Aimed at “travellers who like reading” – they stock the most fantastic selection of travel books, as well as a wide range of non-travel, literary books. I can spend hours in here.

The Poetry Cafe in London
This place gets my vote not only because it holds poetry readings and is a lovely, friendly place to relax, but also because it serves marmite on toast.

Society of Authors
I’ve been a member of the Society of Authors for several years and would recommend the Society to all writers. It is a great resource and the people who work here are simply brilliant at their jobs – no author should be without membership.

Falmouth Festival of Literature and the Arts
I was first asked to speak at the Falmouth Festival of Literature and the Arts in 2004, just after Lizzie Siddal: The Tragedy of a Pre-Raphaelite Supermodel was published. Despite the unseasonably wet and windy weather, the festival was a great success – such a wonderful atmosphere and so many enthusiastic people. Kirsten and Andy, who founded and still run the festival, are an inspiration to anyone who wants to make their dream happen.

Bourgeois Boheme
Bourgeois Boheme sells extremely tempting shoes, bags, accessories and fabulous stuff that didn’t cost the earth to produce. I love it – and it’s run by a great couple who care about their customers.

Climate Care
This website shows how you can offset the CO2 emissions you produce by driving, flying or heating your home. Check it out today and start making a difference to the world.
